Exciting News: Malaga Chosen as Home for Groundbreaking Semiconductor R&D Center, Bringing 450 Jobs

I'm thrilled to share the exciting news that Malaga has been selected as the site for a cutting-edge research and development center by IMEC, the world's leading semiconductor research facility. Spearheading innovation with a team of 450 researchers, this new facility is set to be a game-changer.

Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation, José Luis Escrivá, proudly announced that Malaga City will host the headquarters of IMEC's branch in Spain, marking a significant milestone for the Inter-University Microelectronics Centre. Established in Belgium in 1984, IMEC has grown to become the foremost laboratory for semiconductor research and technology transfer globally.

This groundbreaking research and development (R&D) center, a first-of-its-kind venture for IMEC outside Belgium, will find its home at Malaga TechPark. Spanning a 46,000 square meter plot, a state-of-the-art building covering approximately 32,000 square meters will be constructed. The center is poised to employ 450 highly qualified professionals, reinforcing Malaga's position as a key player in the semiconductor industry.

Minister Escrivá expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the Andalusian regional government and city council in making this vision a reality. Minister Carolina España also applauded the achievement, acknowledging the months of hard work leading to this momentous announcement.

The establishment of IMEC's presence in Malaga is set to facilitate knowledge transfer and introduce cutting-edge semiconductor technology. This move will foster collaboration with local companies and startups, propelling innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.

Malaga's successful bid for the R&D center marks the beginning of its journey to become a pivotal hub in the semiconductor industry. IMEC, with its 5,500 researchers from 95 countries and over 600 industrial partners, including major global companies in the sector, brings a wealth of expertise and opportunities to Malaga.
